Sorry, the order is not the best yet...
Here I put some films together I have or I know of. If possible I added a little comment and a rating (more for the dance scenes). If I got some information from 'Halliwell's Film Guide', I added them too - even his rating (HW). But his rating is mainly for the plot, I would say, not for the dancing... (Maybe I should mention, that Halliwell seems to have a special kind of humor...)
If you don't see something here, that you think should be listed here, or if you know some more about certain films: Please informe me, so I can update the list.

| *** | Singin' In The Rain | 1951 MGM | c | Tap | 105 | Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor & Debbie Reynolds singing and dancing.
Funny film with really good dance scenes. "Brilliant comic musical, the best picture by far of Hollywood in transition, with the catchiest tunes, the liveliest choreography, the most engaging performances and the most hilarious jokes of any musical." (Halliwell) |
**** |
| ** | An American In Paris | 1951 MGM | c | Tap, Jazz | 115 | Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron; Music George Gershwin; Some good dance
scenes; Plot not overwhelming... "Delightful musical holiday, one of the highspots of the Hollywood genre, with infectious enthusiasm and an unexpected sense of the Paris that was." (Halliwell) |
**** |
| *** | On The Town | 1949 MGM | c | Tap, Ballet | 100 | Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Betty Garrett, Ann Miller in a really
funny and fast going movie. "Three sailors enjoy twenty-four hours' leave in New York. Most of this brash location musical counts as among the best things ever to come out of Hollywood; the serious ballet towards the end tends to kill it, but it contains much to be grateful for." (Halliwell) |
**** |
| *** | Royal Wedding | 1951 MGM | c | Tap | 95 | Fred Astaire, Jane Powell, Peter Lawford. A lot of good dancing
by Astaire and Powell. "Thin musical with acceptable numbers" (Halliwell) |
- |
| *** | Grease | 1977 Paramount | c | Jazz, Group | 110 | John Travolta in one of the most fames films... "Grease is not just a costalgic look at a simpler decade - it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock'n'roll! | (nr) |

| *** | That's Dancing | c | mostly Tap | Great collection of important (dance) scenes of different musicals
from the early years till today. There exists a book under the same name with some more written information and great picts. |
(nr) | ||
| *** | Whoopee | 1930 Samuel Goldwyn | c | Tap, Jazz | 95 | Eddie Cantor singing and dancing but mostly making fun. Very good
and funny film. "A timid young man is catapulted into various adventures. Early sound musical from a popular BGroadway show, later remade as Up in Arms." (Halliwell) |
* |
| Can Can | c | Can Can | 105 | French Film | (nr) | ||
| Can Can | 1960 TCF | c | 130 | Frank Sinatra, Shirley Maclaine "A Parisian nightclub dancer in the nieties is sued for performing the Can Can. Flat film of a dull musical, with just a few plums in the pudding" (Halliwell) |
- | ||
| Top Hat | 1935 Polygram | bw | Tap | 100 | Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers "Marvellous Astaire-Rogers musical, with a more or less realistic London supplanted by a totally artificial Venice, and show stopping numbers in a style which is no more separated by amusing plot complications lightly handled by a team of deft farceurs." (Halliwell) |
**** | |
| Second Chorus | 1941 Paramount | bw | Tap | 85 | Fred Astaire, Artie Shaw, ... "Two trumpeters and their lady manager hit Broadway. Mild musical" (Halliwell) | - | |
| ** |
New Faces | 1954 Edward L. Alperson | c | Tap, Jazz | 100 | good singing and dancing; funny; introducing Eartha Kitt "Five min. of plot, ninety-five min. of revue from the Broadway stage; mostly quite amusing, and chiefly notable for introducing Eartha Kitt with all her standards." (Halliwell) |

| *** | Gentlemen Prefer Blondes | 1953 TCF | c | Jazz | 90 | Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russel; singing and dancing. "A dumb blonde and a showgirl go to Paris in search of rich husbands. Musicalized and updated version of the twenties stire; no real vigor, but not too bad" (Halliwell) | * |
| *** | Hellzapoppin | 1941 Universal | bw | Lindy | 85 | With Whitey's Lindy Hoppers... "Zany modificatin of a smash burlesque revue; the crazy jokes are toned down and a romantic interest is added (and tentatively sent up). The result is patchy but often hilarious, and the whole is a handy consensus of forties humour and pop music." (Halliwell) |
*** |
| *** | A Day At The Races | 1937 MGM | bw | Lindy | 110 | The Marxes help a girl who owns a sanatorium and a racehorse. | **** |

| **** |
Summer Stock | 1950 MGM | c | (Round Dance), Lindy, Tap | 110 | Great dance scene when older people have their round dance (?)
meeting and the young suddenly take over the music and dance the
Lindy. The scene ends with a very good tap number of Judy Garland
and Gene Kelly "Likeable but halting musical with the star's weight problems very obvious." (Halliwell) |
* |
| Manhattan Merry Go Rounds | (nr) | ||||||
| Stage Door Canteen | 1963 Sol Lesser | bw | Lindy, Excentric, Boogie | 130 | William Terry, Cheryl Walkers, Katharine Hepburn, Harpo Marx,
Helen Hayes, Count Basie, Edgar Bergen, Benny Goodman, ... "How the stars in New York entertained the armed forces during World War II. Nothing as a film, mildly interesting as sociology and for some rarish appearances." (Halliwell) |
* | |
| Follow The Boys | 1944 Universal | bw | 110 | "A song and dance man organizes entertainment for the US troops during World War II. Scrappy, unattractive propaganda tribute by the stars to the stars, enliveded only by a few guest spots." (Halliwell) | * | ||
| Cabin In The Sky | 1943 MGM | bw | Lindy | 100 | An idle, gambling husband is reformed by a dream of his own death, with God and Satan battling for his soul. Consistently interesting, often lively, but generally rather stilted all-black musical which must have seemed a shole lot fresher on the stage. Still, a good try." (Halliwell) | ** | |
| Canterville Ghost | 1943 MGM | bw | 95 | "The young girl heiress of an English castle introduces GIs to the resident ghost. Leaden comedy a long way after Oscar Wilde, sunk by slow script and direction, but partly salvaged by the respective roguishness and infant charm of its stars." (Halliwell) | * | ||

Cabaret | 1972 ABC Pictures | c | Jazz | 125 | Liza Minelli, Joel Grey, Michael York "This version of Isherwood's Berlin stories regrettably folows the plot line of the play 'I Am a Camera' rather than the Broadway musical on which it is allegedly based, and it lacks the incisive remarks of the MC, but the very smart direction creates a near-masterpiece of its own, and most of the songs are intact."
